Does Sunlight Instantly Destroy Hypochlorous Acid?
Written by: Sofia Lopez, Packaging Engineer
One of the most common misconceptions about hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is whether exposure to sunlight, air, or clear packaging immediately causes it to degrade.
The short answer? No.
Like many questions involving science, the reality is more nuanced.
First, We Love That You're Asking These Questions
If you've ever wondered whether sunlight, air exposure, or packaging affect hypochlorous acid, you're asking exactly the right questions.
In fact, understanding stability is one of the most important parts of understanding HOCl.
Many consumers already know that hypochlorous acid doesn't last forever. Over time, HOCl naturally returns to simpler compounds like salt and water. That's simply the nature of the molecule.
So, if you've heard that sunlight, air, heat, or storage conditions can affect HOCl, you're on the right track.
Where the miscommunication occurs is in the idea that these factors instantly destroy hypochlorous acid or trigger rapid degradation the moment they occur.
The reality is more reassuring—and more scientific—than that.
Yes, HOCl Is Sensitive. No, It Isn’t Fragile.
Hypochlorous acid is a highly effective molecule, but it is also inherently unstable. That’s true of HOCl produced by every manufacturer.
Because of this, stability is one of the most important aspects of producing a high-quality hypochlorous acid product. The goal isn’t to make HOCl permanent—that isn’t possible. The goal is to keep it as effective as possible for as long as possible.
At Briotech, stability is built into every step of our process, from formulation to packaging selection to long-term stability testing.
That’s why we spend significant time testing packaging compatibility, evaluating storage conditions, and monitoring product performance over time.
The Myth: Sunlight Instantly Destroys HOCl
A common misconception is that the moment a bottle of HOCl sees sunlight, degradation begins rapidly and the product rapidly becomes ineffective.
This isn’t how it works.
HOCl is light-sensitive, meaning prolonged exposure to certain types of light can contribute to degradation over time. But light exposure does not “activate” a degradation process that suddenly accelerates out of control, nor does a few minutes of sunlight instantly eliminate the active ingredient.
We’ve conducted UV degradation testing on our products and packaging. While extended exposure to sunlight is never recommended, normal handling and everyday use are not the same thing as leaving a bottle in direct sunlight for days.
In practical terms, if your bottle is exposed to sunlight while being used, transported, or stored temporarily, that does not mean the product is suddenly ineffective.
What About Clear Bottles?
The opacity isn’t the problem.
The important question is whether the packaging has been properly tested and selected for compatibility with the product inside.
At Briotech, we thoroughly evaluate our packaging materials, including our clear bottles, to ensure they support product stability. The bottles we use are the result of extensive compatibility and performance testing designed to maintain product quality.
When packaging changes occur, they are never arbitrary. They are carefully considered and chosen based on performance, compatibility, and product protection.
A clear bottle does not automatically mean a product is unstable, just as an opaque bottle does not automatically mean a product is stable.
What matters is the complete system: formulation, packaging, manufacturing controls, and storage.
Another Myth: Air Exposure Immediately Ruins HOCl
Sunlight isn’t the only factor that gets blamed for instant HOCl degradation.
Air often gets the same treatment as clear bottles.
While we always recommend keeping your Briotech products tightly sealed when not in use, normal air exposure during filling, capping, spraying, or transferring product is not going to immediately eliminate the hypochlorous acid.
Using your sprayer, opening the bottle, or briefly transferring product into another container does not trigger a sudden loss of effectiveness.
As with light exposure, degradation is a gradual process influenced by multiple factors over time. Routine handling is already accounted for when products are designed, tested, and packaged.

What We Do—and What You Can Do
Our job is to produce the most stable, effective hypochlorous acid product possible.
That means:
✔ Carefully controlling the manufacturing process
✔ Selecting and testing compatible packaging materials
✔ Conducting stability studies
✔ Evaluating performance under challenging storage conditions
✔ Continuously looking for opportunities to improve
Your job is much simpler.
Follow the storage instructions.
Store products as directed. Keep containers sealed when not in use. Avoid unnecessary exposure to extreme temperatures and prolonged direct sunlight.
That’s it.
The Bottom Line – Don't Panic!
Hypochlorous acid is a sensitive molecule. But it’s not nearly as fragile as some make it seem.
✔ Brief sunlight exposure does not instantly destroy it.
✔ Normal air exposure does not instantly destroy it.
✔ A clear bottle does not automatically destroy it.
At Briotech, we’ve invested years into understanding how to keep HOCl stable and effective. We rigorously test our products, packaging, and storage conditions so that consumers can use them with confidence.
The best thing you can do is use your product as intended and follow the storage recommendations on the label.
Curiosity is what drives good science. By better understanding how HOCl behaves in the real world, you can feel confident in the products you use and the science behind them.
