Hypochlorous Acid (HOCI) for Body Odor: What the Science Shows

Many of our customers love our HOCl cosmetic products (Renew Toner, Topical Skin Spray) for their soothing, hydrating, and strengthening properties. But these products also offer another lesser-known benefit: odor control.
While HOCl won’t prevent sweating, it can help neutralize body odors. That means HOCl and your regular antiperspirant can work together as a powerful team, especially after a tough workout or a long day out in the sun.
So how does it work? The secret is in the science!

Hypochlorous acid is a powerful oxidizing agent, meaning that it alters certain molecules by stealing their electrons.
Why does that matter? Because many odor-causing compounds rely on their chemical structure to produce bad smells. When HOCl oxidizes these molecules, it can disrupt their structure, significantly reducing or even eliminating their odor.
In other words, HOCl doesn’t just cover odors; it helps neutralize them at the source.

PUTTING OUR PRODUCTS TO THE TEST
To evaluate the effectiveness of Briotech HOCl for odor control, we commissioned a foot-odor study involving 30 volunteers. Participants were not allowed to use any additional products on their feet during the study period.
One foot was sprayed with Briotech HOCl, while the other remained untreated. Trained evaluators then assessed odor intensity before application, one hour after application, and eight hours after application.
Odor intensity was ranked on a scale from 0–10:
- 0 = no odor
- 10 = very high odor

THE RESULTS ARE CLEAR
- A 94.6% decrease in odor one hour after application
- A 67% decrease in odor eight hours after application
Meanwhile, untreated feet showed a 5% increase in odor over the same time frame.
Based on these findings, Briotech HOCl was determined to have:
- “Excellent anti-odor properties” one hour after application
- “Very good anti-odor properties” eight hours after application
The data speaks for itself.
